One of the men shouldered his bow and got to work skinning the wolves. Between these newcomers and their own grit, the companions managed to kill every last wolf. Then two men emerged from the forest and started shooting arrows at the wolves. Remy stopped running, turned, and sprinted back to aid his companions. The rest of the pack rushed at Kay and Ireena, who were quickly overwhelmed by a mass of pelts and teeth. Cato, still invisible, conjured a blade in his hand and appeared suddenly, slashing at three of the wolves. Jessup helped the children climb up a tree.

They looked back to see wolves pouring out from the forest. Friar Kay slipped down from the trees, hoisted Freek onto his shoulders, and started off down the road. The town of Vallaki was still another two hours away - at walking speed. They could either stay here in the trees or make a run for it. Jessup pointed out that the wolves would now be hunting them. The rest of the party made for the trees, scrambling high up out of reach, then proceeded to rain pinecones and darts and, in Jessup’s case, bullets down at the wolves, finally scaring them off. Cato immediately cast invisibility on himself. The companions were just finishing up their short rest when they noticed a very large pack of wolves stalking them.

Hopefully they could find a new home there, either with new parents or perhaps with the church. The companions offered to bring them to Vallaki. Neither of them wanted to return home to their parents. They were from the village of Barovia, and their parents had sold them to Granny in exchange for more of those meat pies. The two children the party had rescued from the windmill were named Freek and Myrtle.
